For a game made by one guy (with a bunch of ‘helpful’ imput from his Alpha members and playerbase), it’s right up there with Skyrim for hours spent playing, at least for me. A lot of the content isn’t here yet, but unlike many early access games, the developer is actually active with the community, and we can watch new progress being made.

State of the Game #225: Cutting a MAV in Half
May 18, 2016 · MAVs are expensive. MAVs on screen are VERY expensive. But worse, they are expensive just existing in the level. How expensive? Well, in my baseline test, 12 MAVs ate up 60 milliseconds of CPU time, not including the actual drawing of them on the screen. Considering I am looking to be at 16 milliseconds for the whole game, this was a problem.

Mar 29, 2017 · Now, for the In Game Goodness! Heat System Changes. Now that the heat system has been in for a full update I was able to gather enough data to make some adjustments. The first one is making the environmental heat actually affect the MAVs and level objects.

Only now, there is a bunch of code expecting them to be cut in half. This was a much trickier problem to solve, as I had to make some design choices on how I wanted to handle the code branching between the turrets and normal MAVs, as I try to minimize the amount of hard forks in the code as much as possible.

In the pregame lobby the launching of a game is broken into 4 distinct phases. 1 is waiting for other players. Here, you can switch your MAV, check out other players MAVs and wait for more people to join the match. Next is Team setup. For team based games, this is the period in which you can switch teams and talk with your team mates.

To accommodate the new tactics the AI order handling has been expanded from ‘Attack’ and ‘Defend’, to also include ‘Search’, ‘Guard’, ‘Reinforce’, and ‘Flank’. These orders handle how the individual AI MAVs try to position themselves on the battlefield in response to all the conditions they are aware of.
