Mumbai: As 2024 came to a close, Mumbai's citizens gathered at iconic locations such as the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Bandstand, and Juhu Beach, as well as pre-planned event venues, to celebrate and welcome the New Year,

During a major enforcement operation during the New Year, Mumbai traffic police penalised 17,800 motorists and collected penalties totalling Rs 89.19 lakh.

Motorists were also fined for speed violations, driving four-wheelers without wearing the seat belt and using mobile phones while driving.

Police penalised more than 23,000 motorists for violating rules, driving drunk, and obstructing traffic, during the New Year celebrations in Mumbai, officials said on Wednesday.

Mumbai's traffic police have seized 672 electric two-wheelers due to safety violations. The crackdown, conducted between December 18-29, aims to address risk to road users. An official noted that penalties were given to 180 delivery bike riders.

The Mumbai police will implement extensive security measures as the city gears up for the New Year’s Eve celebrations on Tuesday and deploy over 15,000 personnel along with specialised units to focus on issues such as crimes against women, and law and order and traffic violations, including drunk driving.
