Michigan State Spartans have a new defensive coach in James Adams, as well as head coach Jonathan Smith’s first quarterbacks assistant in Jon Boyer.

Michigan State head football coach Jonathan Smith has announced two new hirings on his coaching staff. James Adams will join the defensive staff as safeties coach, while Jon Boyer will be the program’s quarterbacks coach.

A source confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive that Boyer is leaving OSU to become quarterbacks coach at Michigan State for former Beavers coach Jonathan Smith. Boyer was an offensive quality control assistant for six years under Smith at Oregon State. Boyer coached tight ends for one season under current Oregon State coach Trent Bray.

Michigan State has hired former Oregon State tight ends coach Jon Boyer as its quarterbacks coach, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel released Friday evening. Boyer worked under current Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith for six seasons at Oregon State (2018-23).

The move fills a coaching vacancy opened up by the departure of cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin for UCLA. Assistant coach Blue Adams remains the secondary coach, while Boyer fills quarterback duties that were previously handled by offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren.
