Thus, once your flange extender is in place, set the toilet on top of the flange without the wax ring in place. Use wood shims and a 2-foot-long level to get the toilet so that it is indeed level.

There is a wax ring under a toilet that, during installation, gets squashed down to create an airtight seal between the underside of the toilet and the top of the flange on the drain pipe.
