“The Marvelous Land of Oz” was published in 1904 but, even though it is well over a century old, book writer, lyricist, composer, and director Whitaker is convinced its themes are still relevant.

The film is directed by Walter Murch, who developed the screenplay with Gill Dennis from the early 20th-century novels (The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, in particular) by L. Frank Baum.

Virtually all of today's "Oz" variations take off, not from the Baum books, but from the 1939 movie, where Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch stole the show. Baum's books are still in print.
