Friday's storm could produce a coating to a couple of inches, mostly south of the Mass Pike and southwest of Boston.

Temperatures will remain near freezing during the storm, with low temperatures dropping into the 20s Friday night.

"Low pressure will approach the area Friday afternoon and with cold air already in place, snow will become likely across the area through early Saturday," according to the statement. There's a 50% to 90% chance of 3 inches or more of snowfall from Long Island through New York City, according to the forecast.

It's the holiday season, and while warmer-than-normal temperatures are expected across much of the U.S., a white Christmas is still possible in parts of New York.
