But Reid died a year later, before his dream was realized. After the hotel opened, in 1891, his sons managed it for decades, until it was acquired by the English winemaking company Blandy’s.

There were no other takers from Reid's next morning, and only a handful from the other hotels, Madeira being a new arrival on the golf holiday scene and not yet a busy one.
