One woman from Australia didn't realise, admitting that she just said what she saw around her, rather than realising that there was an actual phonetic alphabet.

After the call she was shocked and embarrassed after finding out she was supposed to use the NATO phonetic alphabet, which is used in both Australia and the UK, when asked to spell over the phone.
