Decanters of "orange wine," whie wine that has been fermented on its skins and is more orange and cloudy than bright yellow in San Francisco, Calif., on September 30, 2009.
Orange wine, also known as skin-contact wine and skin-macerated wine, is made from white-wine grapes where the skins have been kept on for weeks or even months, as opposed to being quickly removed.
However, many orange wine makers are dedicated to sustainable practices and making wines that use fewer added chemicals. Tinto Amorio, for example, uses certified-organic grapes and minimal sulphur.
