OpenAI is working to fix an issue that caused major outages in its applications, including ChatGPT. A statement from the artificial intelligence (AI) company, posted on social media platform, X, just after 4 p.m. Thursday, noted "most" of ChatGPT, the API, and Sora were down Thursday afternoon.

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI is experiencing an outage Thursday, causing many users to error out when using ChatGPT or the company's API. The tech company says the outage is caused by an “upstream provider” issue. The outage began around 2 p.m. ET, according to DownDetector. Nearly 15,000 people were reporting outages at that time.

OpenAI has said that access to ChatGPT has mostly been restored after the widely popular AI tool stopped working for many users across the world early on Friday, December 27. ChatGPT’s developer API (application programming interface) as well as the startup’s newly launched AI video generator Sora were also down for a couple of hours.

More than 50,000 outages have been reported for ChatGPT on Downdetector.com after a surge in reports around 1:30 p.m EST. The outage appeared to persist beyond 3:30 p.m. EST. OpenAI did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment about the status of its chatbot.
