The Sihek (Guam kingfisher) was extinct in the wild for 40 years. Now, the rare birds are being reintroduced into the tropical forests of Palmyra Atoll thanks to the Sihek Recovery Program.

Chad Eliason, an evolutionary biologist who studies birds at the Field Museum, said the belted kingfisher is also distinguished by its rat-a-tat call and high-speed dives into water.
