A call for moratorium on catching deep-sea mesopelagic fish - MSN
Since 2020, researchers have called for a global moratorium on mesopelagic fishing, concerned that plumbing these new depths for fish could take a toll on climate action and biodiversity.
Another deep-sea dweller washed up on a Carlsbad beach this week and its body now joins millions of other rare specimens being preserved for research at a lab in San Diego.
The 31st was discovered in December 2021 on the shores of Encinitas. It was the third to be found in California that year. It is unknown exactly how any of the deep-sea creatures ended up on land.
The delicate fish didn’t survive its short stay on land -- or attacks by seagulls -- but Frable says SIO 21-37 will be preserved to help researchers, possibly for hundreds of years.
