The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggested that the cerebellum is necessary for the formation of new long-term, but not short-term, motor memories.
“Overall, this study shows progressive cerebral degeneration in the motor cortex can be detected in vivo in [patients with ALS] with more aggressive clinical presentations,” the researchers wrote.
The motor cortex is in the cerebral cortex of the brain. The largest part of the brain, the cerebral cortex, has many sub-parts that send signals to each other.
