Isaac is the fulfillment of God’s promise, the long-awaited and almost-despaired-of biological heir and heir of the covenant. Now God asks Abraham to sacrifice him.

One of the most dramatic moments of the entire Bible occurs when Abraham reaches out his hand to take the knife, ready to sacrifice his son Isaac in obedience to the Lord (Gen. 22:10).

God asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, up to Him. Once God saw that Abraham was willing to do what He asked, God stopped Abraham from killing Isaac.

The white ram reaches Abraham just in time, offering itself as sacrifice instead of the boy—a bargain God wholeheartedly accepts. The ram's selflessness doesn't stop there, however.

Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took his two young men with him and his son Isaac. He split the wood for the offering, got up, and went to the place which God had told him.

In response to God’s command, Abraham takes Isaac up to Mt. Moriah to offer his beloved son as a sacrifice. God intervenes at the last moment and Isaac is saved, but the damage is already done.
