An Indian police volunteer was convicted on Saturday of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at a hospital in the eastern city Kolkata, in the speedy trial of a crime that sparked national outrage over a lack of safety for women.

An Indian court has convicted a civic police volunteer of brutally raping and murdering a female doctor at work in a Kolkata hospital last year.

A special court in Kolkata on Saturday convicted Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case. A civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy was named the "sole prime accused" in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year.

The case pertains to the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor. Her body was found on August 9 in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
