Michigan State Spartans have a new defensive coach in James Adams, as well as head coach Jonathan Smith’s first quarterbacks assistant in Jon Boyer.

Michigan State head football coach Jonathan Smith has announced two new hirings on his coaching staff. James Adams will join the defensive staff as safeties coach, while Jon Boyer will be the program’s quarterbacks coach.

Oregon State has its second offseason opening on its football coaching staff as tight ends coach Jon Boyer is headed to Michigan State. A source confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive that Boyer is leaving OSU to become quarterbacks coach at Michigan State for former Beavers coach Jonathan Smith.

Michigan State football hired two new coaches on Monday, which should complete head coach Jonathan Smith’s staff for the 2025 season.

The move fills a coaching vacancy opened up by the departure of cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin for UCLA. Assistant coach Blue Adams remains the secondary coach, while Boyer fills quarterback duties that were previously handled by offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren.
