The city lies 324 km southeast of the national capital New Delhi, 250 km northwest of the state capital Lucknow, 138 km east of Agra, 120 km northeast of Gwalior, 37 km northeast of Bhind, 55 km from Mainpuri, 170 km west of Kanpur and 360 km from Prayagraj. The city was an important centre for the Indian Rebellion of 1857. It is also the sangam or confluence of the Yamuna and Chambal rivers. The district is very much famous for Yamuna and Chambal ravines which have been formed due to thousands of years of erosion and change in the course of river. The Yamuna ravines is largest in area in Etawah compared to the other districts in which it is found. Etawah have the largest Chambal ravines in the Chambal region area where the Chambal river forms ravines even greater than the ravines formed by Yamuna and it is deeply intersected by Chambal ravines with its border at Agra, Bhind, Auraiya and Jalaun districts respectively. Because of its dual nature of both Chambal and Yamuna ravines, Etawah is called Chambal ka Shahar in UP. It is the 26th most populous city in Uttar Pradesh. There are six revenue divisions in Etawah district-Etawah, Bharthana, Jaswantnagar, Saifai, Chakarnagar and Takha.In the medieval times Etawah was ruled by various rulers like Sultans of Delhi, Mughals and most notably in the late 13 th Century to early 16th century by the Tomaras of Gwalior who came from Delhi and settled in Gwalior and ruled the adjacent areas of Bhind, Morena, Dholpur, Etawah, Agra, Mathura, Gwalior, Shivpuri, Guna, Mainpuri, Hathras, Aligarh, Alwar, Sheopur, Sawai Madhopur, KarauliJhansi, lalitpur, Bharatpur and Delhi etc.
